Bamboo, Wheat Straw or Sugarcane — Which Eco Drinkware Material Suits Your Brand?

By Chilli Promotions Team · May 2026 · 8 min read 🌿 NoCO2 Certified
Bamboo promotional drinkware vs wheat straw vs sugarcane — three plant-based eco cups for Australian corporate gifting

Three materials dominate the plant-based eco drinkware range conversation: bamboo, wheat straw, and sugarcane (bagasse). All three are marketed as sustainable alternatives to conventional plastic. All three are BPA-free. All three can carry your company logo.

But they perform differently, look different, cost different amounts, and suit different use cases. If you're a corporate buyer choosing between them, this guide cuts through the marketing and gives you a straight comparison so you can make the right call for your brand.

Bamboo Promotional Drinkware

Bamboo is a grass, not a tree, and one of the most renewable materials on Earth. It grows up to 90cm per day, requires no pesticides or artificial irrigation, and sequesters carbon as it grows. Bamboo promotional drinkware typically uses a bamboo fibre composite (finely ground bamboo mixed with a food-grade binder) or a solid bamboo shell with a stainless steel or silicone inner. For a broader look at all plant-based and recycled options, see our eco friendly promotional products category.

Durability

Bamboo drinkware is moderately durable. It's more robust than wheat straw or sugarcane and holds up well under daily use. However, it's not dishwasher-safe at high temperatures. The bamboo fibre composite can warp or crack if repeatedly exposed to intense heat. Hand washing is recommended, and communicating this clearly to recipients via a branded care card helps extend product life.

Print Quality

Bamboo is one of the best materials for laser engraving. The natural fibre surface produces a sharp, high-contrast engraving with no ink required, giving a premium, permanent branded result. Screen printing and pad printing are also available for those who want a logo in brand colours. The natural warm-brown surface of bamboo means full-colour printing has a slightly different appearance compared to white or light-coloured surfaces.

Certifications to Look For

Best For

Corporate gifts for premium and wellness brands, hospitality gifting, sustainability-conscious brand campaigns, executive welcome packs, and campaigns where the product will be photographed for brand content. Bamboo photographs beautifully.

Price Range (AUD, branded, 50-500 units)

$8-$25 per unit, depending on size, construction, and branding method.

Wheat Straw Promotional Drinkware

Wheat straw drinkware is made from the fibrous stalks left after wheat grain is harvested, an agricultural by-product that would otherwise be burned or ploughed back into the soil. Ground wheat straw is combined with a food-grade polypropylene (PP) or PLA binder to create a rigid, lightweight material that looks and feels similar to conventional plastic.

Durability

Wheat straw drinkware is lightweight and reasonably durable for everyday use. It's less robust than stainless steel or aluminium but performs well as a daily cup or tumbler. Like bamboo, it's not recommended for dishwasher use above 60°C, as the binder can degrade over time. For event giveaways where the product has a shorter expected lifespan, this is less of a concern.

Print Quality

Wheat straw has a slightly textured, matte surface that takes screen printing and pad printing very well. Colours appear slightly softer than on a smooth plastic surface, which can give a more natural, premium feel for nature-forward brands. Full-colour digital wrap printing is available on some products.

Certifications to Look For

Note: wheat straw products do not carry FSC certification (FSC is specific to wood and forest products). Some manufacturers offer third-party agricultural waste verification. Ask for this if the sustainability credentials are important to your campaign.

Best For

Conferences, trade shows, staff welcome kits, mid-volume campaigns (100-1,000 units), and situations where you want an eco credential at a competitive price point. Wheat straw is the most cost-effective plant-based eco drinkware option. For a broader guide to sustainable gifting across all product types, see our eco-friendly corporate gifts guide.

Price Range (AUD, branded, 50-500 units)

$4-$12 per unit, depending on size and branding method.

Sugarcane / Bagasse Promotional Drinkware

Bagasse is the fibrous residue left after sugarcane is crushed to extract its juice. It's one of the most abundant agricultural by-products in the world, and it's 100% compostable under industrial composting conditions. Sugarcane drinkware appears in two main forms: fully compostable single-use cups and bowls (common in food service), and coated reusable tumblers with a food-grade inner lining that can be used and washed multiple times.

Durability

For single-use compostable sugarcane products, durability is intentionally limited. These products are designed to be used once and composted, not to last for years. For coated reusable sugarcane drinkware, durability is comparable to wheat straw, with similar care requirements (hand wash, avoid high heat).

Print Quality

Sugarcane has a natural, slightly rough texture. It takes pad printing and screen printing well for simple logos and text. For complex full-colour artwork, a branded paper or compostable sleeve is often a better solution.

Certifications to Look For

Important: "Compostable" means industrially compostable, not compostable in a home compost bin. If your event doesn't have access to industrial composting facilities, these products will end up in landfill where they do not compost effectively. Be transparent about this with your audience.

Best For

Events with on-site industrial composting facilities; environmental and sustainability organisations; campaigns where the "compostable" credential is the primary message; catered events where you're replacing conventional single-use catering cups.

Price Range (AUD, branded, 50-500 units)

$3-$10 per unit for single-use compostable; $6-$15 for reusable coated versions.
